City of London
You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do during your stay at Cheval Calico House. It’s impossible to miss the Tower of London, our immediate neighbour and one of London’s four World Heritage Sites. Any first-time visitor to the capital should make the time to explore this 1,000 year-old attraction and it’s worth allowing a full day to do so.
We also recommend you don’t leave London without experiencing a cruise on the River Thames. It’s an ideal way to get an overview of the main landmarks, and there are a variety of options from the quayside just steps from our front door.
If it’s contemporary culture you’re after, there are a number of markets in the area selling everything from flowers to furniture. Home to a feast of fresh and cooked foods, and about 15 minutes’ walk away, is the famous Borough Market, and you can visit this bustling market during the day from Wednesday to Saturday.
If you’re a fan of flowers, cheese and meat, and fancy exploring a host of city bars, then be sure to visit Leadenhall Market, located in the heart of the financial district and open from Monday to Friday. It gets busy in the evenings once the workers in the City spill out from their offices, and there is a decent selection of pubs and wine bars. This lively market was the backdrop for the “Diagon Alley” scenes from the Harry Potter films.
Other attractions not to miss are Tower Bridge, the Museum of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, and Monument, which commemorates the starting point of the Great Fire of London in 1666. You can walk the steps to the top of the column for some great views.
For those who appreciate gardens and greenery, a visit to the Sky Garden in the so-called ‘Walkie-Talkie’ building is a must. Entrance is free here, but you’ll need to book your tickets a week in advance.
