Mindfulness is a hot topic, particularly as of late, but are you aware of the benefits received from practicing mindfulness? In this post, we will be outlining these benefits, what you can do to practice mindfulness and also the tools that will help you incorporate mindfulness into your daily life.

All that is required is a few minutes of your day to begin the process. Continue daily for 21 days in a row, and you’ll form a habit – mindfulness will become a well-established routine that your mind, body and soul will thank you for.

Some people take longer than others to adapt to a habit so remember to give yourself some time and be patient. Practice your selected mindfulness exercises at your own pace.

What are the benefits of mindfulness?

To begin with, mindfulness helps us to destress whilst reducing anxiety, and the techniques used for mindfulness are also widely used by specialists as a form of therapy to help conquer depression.

Did you know that the term, “mindfulness” has been used to refer to a psychological state of awareness. In a world full of distractions, we may feel the need to be doing something all the time, however, sometimes all we need to do is be in the present. Mindfulness techniques bring some awareness to ourselves as well as our environment, and helps us to understand what our body really needs in the moment. According to Killingsworth and Gilbert, “a wandering mind is an unhappy mind”.

So if you’re feeling like there is too much going on in the world around you, mindfulness exercises are perfect to help bring the focus back to yourself, and experience the things around you moment by moment.

How can you implement mindfulness into your life? (and tools)

Daily affirmations

Start your day off with positive affirmations to reconnect you with all the positive things to be grateful for in life. Affirmations can be used to reprogram your mind to release your fears, negative thoughts and worry. If the affirmation is repeated for 26-30 days, it will go straight to your subconscious mind which can bring about a change in your core beliefs, since your conscious mind did not previously believe something you would have liked. These affirmations and thought patterns will create cognitive patterns and this method is being used to create new habits, mindset work and achieving anything you’re set to achieve.

Meditation

Based on Healthline, a study conducted over a set amount of days with 1,300 adults, demonstrated the most significant decrease in stress levels pertaining to those individuals with the highest levels at the beginning of the study. Other than helping us become more present, meditation also helps to improve a wider range of conscious skills that your mind can benefit from, such as willpower, attention and focus skills. Meditation also helps with stress management, assisting with how you process challenging situations. It can be viewed as a form of mindfulness that helps to train your mind.

Keeping active daily

Keeping yourself active with exercises can help improve your health and promote stronger muscles and bones. According to the NHS, keeping active daily can help reduce the risk of major illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by 30%. But physical exercise also goes beyond the obvious bodily benefits – the chemicals released during exercise can help you feel good, boost your self-esteem, improve concentration and also improve the quality of your sleep.

Journaling and morning pages

Journaling can help get all your thoughts out of your mind providing you with a clear slate. Morning pages is a technique used by many people in the morning to brain dump, in other words write down everything going on in your head. Imagine a cup full of water, if it is overloaded, it will not take on any more – similarly with our brain, if there is too much going on in our mind, we will struggle with our ability to process and take on additional information.

Journaling is a method that has existed for many thousands of years, where people have used it to document important events, research and anything going on in the mind.

Journaling is like writing down what your mind is sharing with you, having an honest conversation with yourself and a perfect space to be open because you will be the person that will be reflecting back on these journal entries.

If you decide to give morning pages a try, here is a tip: allow yourself to write down everything on your mind for 15 minutes without stopping, including random words, phrases and thoughts. After that, reflect on what you’ve written and if you notice any patterns. Highlight anything important with a highlighter or use something that might help you notice that importance of what you’ve written. If you feel that an action needs to be taken, you can create a to-do list.

Rest

Sometimes, all that our body requires is time to recharge. There is so much going on around us that distracts us from the present and we often find ourselves constantly looking forward. When it is time to rest, let your body, mind and soul relax.

Our body is our temple and we should treat it with care and respect. A simple way to start practicing rest is to give yourself the permission to do so.

We would also recommended unplugging from the digital world, as a lot of distractions in today’s world stem from the device in our hands, our mobile phones. Our mobile phones, although handy, share a lot of external information. Resting is a perfect time to just focus on yourself, not what everyone else is up to.

Forest App helps to keep you away from your phone. If you’re able to stay away from your mobile phone for a specific time that you’ve set, a tree will grow in your garden on the app. You may also look back and look at your daily analytics. Another wonderful thing about Forest Pro is that if you’re able to stay focused in the amount of time you’ve set your forest timer for, a real tree will be planted with a tree-planting organisation to help the environment.
